In most SSA land is not scarcy at all. Poor technology and lack of appropriate land policies and Land Use Plans especially in rural Africa reduces the land for agricultural production hence food insecurity. Foreign agricultural investors are majoring in producing cash crops (barley, coffee, jatropha, tea, tree plantation) and dairy and beef cattle husbandry but not food crops production. Badly enough smallholder farmers never benefited from foreign investors in any way even in contract farming hence they suffer high input prices due to economy of scale, poor agricultural marketing policies, and lack of incentives. Look for SAGCOT! Is it real going to make changes to smallholder farmers or smallholder farmers are going to loose their land. In long run we expect eruption of land possession conflicts between smallholder farmers and foreign investors
